Shelf: the level drawn by repeated lows or highs
A shelf is a price the market has already touched several times. Meridian Engine readings use it to write precise conditions: which shelf, and which close after it has been crossed.
Updated 2026-10-02
This page explains a term of the method and how to check it against public data. It does not say what to do in any market.
Definition
A horizontal level formed by repeated lows or highs.
A shelf and a liquidity pool often point to the same price from two sides: the pool is the liquidity that gathers beyond the equal lows, the shelf is the horizontal level those lows draw on the chart.
How a reading uses it
In invalidation conditions the shelf is there for precision. A condition written on a stated shelf, with its price, and on an hourly close can be checked afterwards on any public series, with no room for interpretation. It is a way of making the reading verifiable, not a pointer on what to do.
Example from the gold reading
One of the two invalidation conditions was: price first sweeps the equal-low shelf at 4,273.8 and then closes back above 4,304.9, a failed breakdown repeating the pattern of 22 September. Price traded through the shelf within two hours, but did not close back above 4,304.9 by 21:30 UTC: the condition came within 6.3 points and was not met.

How to spot one yourself
Look for two or more lows, or highs, at almost the same price and draw the horizontal line through them. Then, as in every reading, what counts is the close of the hourly bar in UTC, not the low or high touched during the bar.
