Displacement: when a structure break carries more weight

Not every structure break carries the same weight. In Meridian Engine readings each break has a grade, displacement, indeterminate or drift, written down before the outcome.

Updated 2026-10-02

This page explains a term of the method and how to check it against public data. It does not say what to do in any market.

Definition

A structure break made by wide, fast bars relative to ATR.

The term comes from smart money concepts. A structure break is the moment price moves past a high or low that mattered; displacement means it does so decisively, with bars wider than the recent average range, rather than drifting past the level.

How a reading uses it

The grade says how much weight to give a break. A displacement break points to strong participation; a drift break points to the opposite. On their own they decide nothing: they count together with liquidity and the other timeframes, and the reading says so.

Example from the gold reading

XAUUSD · 24 September 2026 · issued at 00:28 UTC

The structure had three breaks. The reading recorded them like this: one break was of displacement quality, the two that followed were graded indeterminate and drift, meaning thin participation. That is why it wrote that not all of the structure carried the same weight, and set the counter-case beside the main reading.

How to check it yourself

On hourly bars from a public source, look at the bar that moves past the level: how wide it is compared with the bars before it, and whether it overlaps them. ATR, the average range of recent bars, is the yardstick. Then compare with the grade written in the reading.
